THE SITE

The site accommodates a single family home on a cul-de-sac, on a steeply-sloping site. Several protected trees are in the garden. The road has several recently-completed, similarly-sized apartment blocks.

THE BRIEF

We were asked to maximise the site up to a maximum accommodation of nine apartments.

THE CHALLENGES

The suburban context and heavily sloping site were the two main design challenges.

THE SOLUTION

We worked closely with the planning officers, providing evidence to substantiate the application, culminating in a scheme that provides excellent accommodation, landscaped gardens, off-street parking, and disabled accessibility to all areas. The shape and materials used in the design reflect the wooded area and ‘fold’ around the main mature tree. The planning application was overwhelmingly supported and praised as an example of good development, with a recommendation to keep us as architects through to completion.
